Several Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Plane into Sydney

Several people have been injured after a Delta jet traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered significant turbulence this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a representative for the carrier told. A number of the onboard staff were injured.

Emergency medical services said they treated a total of five people, and transferred a trio to a medical facility with relatively minor issues that comprised spinal discomfort and headaches. The injured ranged from their 30s to 70s.

The event represents the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by turbulence, with researchers saying that global warming is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 people and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson noted, adding that the plane arrived "safely" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service reported they were alerted just three minutes prior to the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

Last year, two dozen individuals were injured when another Delta jet, travelling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, experienced "considerable" turbulence just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and had to make an unscheduled landing.

In 2024, those on board on a certain international flight experienced a frightening five seconds bout of severe turbulence. One passenger lost their life and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers lifted out of their seats and were slammed back.

Bumpy air is fairly routine while flying, and while cases of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are remained quite uncommon.
